Heat detectors

Heat detectors sound an alarm when there are dangerous increases in room temperature. They are not activated by things such as smoke from burning toast.

The Acceptable Solutions C/AS1 and C/AS2 were amended in November 2023 to cite NZS 4514:2021 Interconnected smoke alarms for houses for the installation of alarms in new household units. The amendments have a 12-month transition period that will end in November 2024. The standard allows for alarms in kitchens to be heat alarms to avoid nuisance activations. There are systems where both smoke alarms and heat alarms can be connected wirelessly. Models are available that can be hard-wired or operate with a 10-year sealed battery.

Heat detectors may also be suitable for some garages or hobby rooms where smoke alarms may result in nuisance activations.
